The Cocker Spaniel is a merry, affectionate sporting dog beloved for its silky coat, long feathered ears, and famously sweet expression. Originally bred in Spain and England to flush and retrieve game birds — the name comes from its skill at hunting woodcock — the Cocker combines a gentle, people-loving temperament with the athleticism of its hunting heritage. There are actually two distinct breeds: the smaller American Cocker Spaniel and the slightly larger English Cocker Spaniel, both descended from the same sporting roots.
