About the Mastiff
The Mastiff โ often called the English or Old English Mastiff โ is one of the most massive of all dog breeds, an ancient giant whose ancestors guarded homes and fought in arenas thousands of years ago. Enormous, dignified, and powerful, the modern Mastiff has been bred into a calm, gentle, and devoted family guardian.
Behind its imposing size and solemn expression is a good-natured, affectionate dog deeply devoted to its family. The Mastiff is a natural protector โ courageous but rarely aggressive โ content to be a quiet, watchful presence in the home. Its scale, drool, and shorter lifespan, however, demand thoughtful commitment from any owner.

- Brush weekly; the short coat sheds moderately year-round.
- Clean facial wrinkles regularly to prevent irritation.
- Keep a cloth handy โ Mastiffs drool considerably.
- Trim those large nails and check ears routinely.
Health Considerations
The Mastiff's giant size brings a shorter lifespan and several serious health concerns that responsible breeders screen for.
- Hip and elbow dysplasia โ common in giant breeds; ask for clearances.
- Bloat (GDV) โ a serious risk; feed measured meals and avoid hard exercise after eating.
- Heart conditions โ including cardiomyopathy; screening helps.
